War
Last Edition Recap
How have you applied the last edition to your life?
Opening Prayer
Lord, strengthen us for the battle we cannot see but constantly face; equip us with Your armour today. Amen.
Introduction
The news floods us with evil—bombings, murders, executions. Yet thousands of “silent” evils never make headlines. A harsh word that destroys someone’s confidence. The small theft no one notices. The gossip that ruins a reputation. Draw a scale from one to five, with an innocent baby at one end and Satan himself at the other. Where would you place various evils? A white lie—perhaps a two? Murder—surely a four? But here’s what unsettles us: where do you place yourself on this scale? That anger you harboured yesterday, the jealousy you nurture, the unforgiveness you clutch—where do they fall? We rank evil by human standards, creating comfortable hierarchies that keep our sins looking manageable. But God sees differently. To Him, there’s no scale of acceptable versus unacceptable sin. There’s only one arrow pointing away from Him toward Satan, and the Cross pointing back. Edmund Burke warned, “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” But the deeper truth is this: we’re already in a war, whether we acknowledge it or not. The question isn’t whether we’ll fight, but whether we’ll stand.

Final Thought
The scale of evil is an illusion we create to make our sins tolerable. We place ourselves at two whilst pointing at others’ fours and fives. But God doesn’t use our scale. To Him, every arrow pointing away from His holiness leads to the same destination—Satan himself. The bombings that horrify us and the gossip we excuse both serve the same master. This is war, not a philosophical debate. Peter warns of a roaring lion seeking to devour, not nibble. Paul doesn’t suggest we consider armour; he commands us to put it on. Every piece. Every day. Because the “silent” evils—the ones we commit and ignore—clear the path for the spectacular evils we condemn. When good people do nothing, evil doesn’t just triumph; it recruits. But here’s the hope: Christ has overcome the world. The Cross that points us back to God is stronger than any arrow pointing away. You’re not fighting to win a war—Christ already won. You’re fighting to stand. To hold ground. To refuse recruitment. The armour isn’t for conquest; it’s for resistance. Be strong in the Lord’s mighty power, not your own. Stand.
