The Seal
Last Edition Recap
How have you applied the last edition to your life?
Opening Prayer
Father God, remind us that we are Your children and show us who we are meant to be in You. Amen.
Introduction
In the days before self-sealing envelopes and email, people protected their correspondence with wax seals. They would heat red wax until it melted, dab it where the paper edges met, then press their personal mark into the warm wax before it hardened. This seal – perhaps a family crest or symbol of office – served two purposes: it prevented unauthorised reading and declared ownership. The seal proclaimed whose authority stood behind the message.
We still use this language today. When something receives the “seal of approval,” it means someone in authority has examined it and declared it worthy. A document bearing an official seal carries weight that an unmarked document never could. The seal transforms ordinary paper into something with authority, authenticity, and protection.
This ancient practice reveals something profound about identity and belonging. A seal is more than security – it’s a declaration of ownership, a mark of authority, a guarantee of authenticity. It says, “This belongs to me. I stand behind this. My reputation validates this.” The difference between a sealed and unsealed document isn’t just the wax – it’s the relationship it represents.

Final Thought
That ancient practice of sealing letters illuminates a stunning spiritual reality. Just as a wax seal declared ownership and guaranteed authenticity, God has placed His seal upon you. This isn’t merely metaphorical – Ephesians 1:13-14 declares that when you believed, you were marked with a seal: the promised Holy Spirit.
Consider what this means. The God of the universe has pressed His mark upon you, declaring, “This one belongs to me.” The Holy Spirit isn’t just evidence of this seal; He is the seal itself. His presence in your life is God’s mark of ownership, His guarantee of authenticity, His declaration that you are His possession.
In John 6:27, God the Father placed His seal of approval on Jesus, the Son of Man. Jesus bears the full authority and approval of heaven. But here’s the astounding truth – through Christ, that same seal is placed upon you. The same Spirit who validated Jesus’ ministry now marks you as God’s own. You carry heaven’s seal of approval.
This seal does more than mark ownership; it guarantees your future. Like a deposit on a house proves the buyer’s serious intent to complete the purchase, the Holy Spirit is God’s deposit, guaranteeing He will complete what He’s begun in you. Your inheritance is secured not by your faithfulness but by His seal.
Think about how you live each day. What percentage of your actions honour this seal? What percentage dishonours it? The seal remains regardless – God doesn’t remove it when you fail. But knowing you bear His mark, His approval, His guarantee should transform how you live. You’re not trying to earn a seal; you’re living worthy of the seal already placed upon you.
Isaiah 43:1 declares, “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name; you are mine.” This is what the seal proclaims over your life every moment. You are not unmarked, unclaimed, or uncertain. You bear the seal of the living God, marked by His Spirit, guaranteed by His promise, secured by His love.
