CoffeeChat 2 – Different Parts One Purpose

Edition 2

Different Parts, One Purpose

Last Edition Recap
How have you applied the last edition to your life?
Opening Prayer
Lord, open our hearts to understand how we each uniquely contribute to Your body, the Church.
Introduction
Cindy felt invisible at church. As a quiet administrator, she watched the worship leaders and preachers receive constant appreciation whilst her behind-the-scenes work went unnoticed. One Sunday, the sound system failed, the bulletins weren’t printed, and the building wasn’t unlocked—all because she was ill. That day, everyone realised how vital her “unseen” ministry truly was. Like organs in a body, some parts are visible, others hidden, but remove any single part and the whole body suffers.
Chat Point 1
  1. How would you describe your role within your church community?
  2. What gifts or talents do you feel you bring to the body of Christ?
  3. When have you felt most valued in your faith community?
  4. How do you typically respond when others receive recognition for their contributions?
  5. What happens to a community when certain members feel unimportant?
Read
1 Corinthians 12:12-31
Key Focus
22)  On the contrary, those parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable,
23)  and the parts that we think are less honorable we treat with special honor. And the parts that are unpresentable are treated with special modesty,
24)  while our presentable parts need no special treatment. But God has put the body together, giving greater honor to the parts that lacked it,
25)  so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other.
Chat Point 2
  1. What stood out for you in this passage about the body metaphor?
  2. How does Paul address the tendency to compare ourselves with others in the church?
  3. Why do you think God designed the church to need diverse gifts rather than identical ones?
  4. How does verse 26 challenge our individualistic mindset?
  5. What would change in your church if everyone truly believed verses 22-25?
Final Thought
Just as Cindy discovered her hidden ministry was essential, Paul reminds us that God has arranged each part of the body exactly where He wants it (v18). The eye cannot dismiss the hand, nor can the head dismiss the feet. Those parts that seem weaker are indispensable (v22). When we honour the “less honourable” parts, we create a body that functions in beautiful unity, where if one suffers, all suffer; if one is honoured, all rejoice (v26).
